Training on GIS

The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) in collaboration with Nepal GIS Society and in kind support from the University Grant Commission (UGC) conducted an In-house GIS training at the Nepal GIS Society office at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on 26th August 2022. The training was provided by Ms. Tyler Stotland, an intern at ESRI (manufacturer of well-known GIS software), an adjunct researcher at SEN and a graduate student at Yale University of Environment, focusing her thesis in Nepal.

The training was participated in by 14 individuals from SEN and Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal. Opening remarks were provided by Dr. Bhola Nath Dhakal (Executive Member, SEN; Head, Department of Geography, Ratna Rajya Multiple Campus, TU) followed by an introduction to ESRI and GIS by Ms. Tyler Stotland.

Ms. Stotland shared her working experience in ArcGIS Pro (the newly refined version of ArcGIS). ArcGIS Pro was similar to ArcGIS but with the added benefit of ease of accessibility through icons, better map visualization, and a much cleaner User Interface. Ms. Stotland taught different geospatial data monitoring techniques like GPS, GIS and remote sensing. In the end, she gave brief information on her thesis on GIS mapping of the electricity regions of Terai landscape of Nepal to study the urban heat wave trends.

At the end of the workshop, Dr. Bhola Nath Dhakal presented Ms. Tyler Stotland with some memorabilia as a farewell for her journey back to the USA and to remember her visit in Nepal.
