The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) organized a training on “Enhancing Climate Data Quality: Imputation, Spatial Interpolation, and Bias Correction” as part of institutional capacity strengthening under the project – Promoting CLimAte ReSilient and Socially Inclusive Water Management in the Lower Karnali Watershed Region, Nepal (CLASSIK) at Kathmandu on 18 June 2025.
Mr. Kumar Aryal, Assistant Professor at Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus and Ph.D. Scholar at the Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (CDHM), Tribhuvan University (TU), along with Mr. Navaraj Pokharel, Associate Researcher at CDHM-TU were resource persons for the training. The training program brought together 10 participants (F:7 M:3) which included graduate students, early career researchers, and climate data users, and practitioners engaged in observational and model-based climate datasets.
The major highlight of the training was practical exposure to the modern techniques to improve climate data quality through imputation, interpolation, and bias correction. Participants learned both the theoretical foundations and implementation of these methods in Python. The trainers emphasized tackling common challenges in real-world datasets and strategies to generate reliable, bias-corrected data for climate impact studies and modeling.
The training provided a platform to discuss the application of interpolation and bias correction techniques that will be used in generating climate data modeling in the project.
