On June 23rd, 2024, The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) successfully conducted a kick-off workshop on Climate Data Analysis: Programming and Remote Sensing Data Applications. This workshop aimed to equip students from various academic levels, ranging from undergraduate to Ph.D., with the necessary programming skills and knowledge to analyze climate data and manipulate satellite data for applications related to water resources in mountain towers.
The participants were from the Department of Meteorology, Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, Department of Applied Sciences and Chemical Engineering of Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus – M.Sc. in Climate Change and Development, and the Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kirtipur.
Esteemed guest speakers, Prof. Rupak Rajbhandari, a highly experienced climate data analyst, and Dr. Dhiraj Pradhananga, President of SEN and UNESCO Chairholder in Mountain Water Sustainability, led the workshop.
The informative and engaging program began with exploring programming fundamentals, including the development of FORTRAN. Participants then delved into the fascinating world of satellite data, reanalysis climate datasets, and exploring its diverse applications and essential techniques for data manipulation.
The workshop introduced GrADS (Grid Analysis and Display System) as a valuable bonus and provided hands-on experience with basic plotting exercises utilizing Aphrodite datasets.
Looking ahead, SEN is planning a series of regular sessions on Climate Data Analysis, tentatively scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays at 2 PM, at Janakpur Engineering College, Lalitpur.
