The International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation—2025: Science, Prediction, and Response to Global Decline in Mountain Snow and Ice

We are pleased to invite you to an Open Forum Discussion with Distinguished Professor John Pomeroy, a globally renowned expert in hydrology and climate science. Prof. Pomeroy will discuss “The International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation—2025: Science, Prediction, and Response to Global Decline in Mountain Snow and Ice.”

The Small Earth Nepal (SEN), Tribhuvan University, ICIMOD, and UNESCO are jointly organizing the engaging discussion, an event of the UNESCO Chair in Mountain Water Sustainability. It is being held as a pre-week event for the Nepal National Glacier, Water, and Weather Week (17-23 March 2025), which is chaired by the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), Government of Nepal.

The other partner organizations include Kathmandu University, SOHAM-Nepal, Cryospheric Society of Nepal, IAHS-Nepal, KIRDARC, and more.

About the Talk

The United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) and the start of the Decade of Action on Cryospheric Sciences. These initiatives highlight the urgent need to address glacier retreat, shrinking snowpacks, and permafrost thaw due to global warming. Prof. Pomeroy will provide insights into the consequences of these changes for hydrology, water resources, and mountain communities, and discuss how science and society can collaborate to manage risks and ensure water sustainability.

Speaker Profile

Prof. John Pomeroy is the UN Co-Chair of the IYGP Advisory Board, UNESCO Chair in Mountain Water Sustainability, and Director of the Global Water Futures Programme at the University of Saskatchewan. His work focuses on mountain hydrology, climate change impacts, and water resource management.
