Talk program by Dr. Ambarish Karmalkar: Extracting actionable information from climate models

Climate models are essential for comprehending the climate system, generating quantitative forecasts of future climatic changes, and informing regional adaptation efforts. The regional-scale climate information produced by these models, however, still has significant uncertainties. In this presentation, he will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of climate models, methods for understanding model behavior, and strategies for extracting useful information at local scales.

About Speaker

Dr. Ambarish Karmalkar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Rhode Island. He is a physical climate scientist studying drivers of regional climate variability and change. While his current research focus spans regions from the Arctic to Antarctica, his earlier work involved regional climate modeling over mountainous Central America and the Caribbean as well as designing global climate model ensembles to explore and quantify uncertainties in climate projections. To make his research accessible and actionable, Ambarish also collaborates with a diverse range of professionals, including ecologists, hydrologists, state officials, and managers to analyze the impacts of climate change on both human and natural resources.
