The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) officially handed over the ownership and management of the fog water harvesting system installed under its pioneering project “Empowering Mountain Communities through Fog Harvesting for Sustainable Water Management” to Khijidemba Rural Municipality, Okhaldhunga on 6 August 2026.
The project, which aimed to address drinking water scarcity in the remote village of Khijidemba Rural Municipality, through fog water harvesting technology, began with an initial field visit and feasibility assessment that explored the potential of fog collection as a sustainable water source. Since then, SEN has worked closely with local stakeholders and installed a fog harvesting system that provided an alternative and climate-resilient solution to water shortages in the area.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between SEN and Khijidemba Rural Municipality for the sustainable management of the fog water harvesting system. The handover marked an important step in strengthening local ownership and securing the future of this important initiative.
Addressing participants, Dr. Madan Lall Shrestha, Advisor to SEN highlighted the significance of the project and its potential as a learning model for the country.
Mr. Gombu Sherpa, Chairperson of Khijidemba Rural Municipality, expressed strong support for the initiative and conveyed sincere gratitude to SEN and the GIZ IKI Small Grants for their valuable support in bringing the project to life. He emphasized the municipality’s commitment to safeguarding and sustaining the system for the benefit of local communities.
The project is expected to contribute significantly to improving access to safe drinking water in the area and serve as a promising example of innovative and nature-based solutions for water management in Nepal’s mountain regions. Through continued local stewardship and collaboration, the initiative has the potential to deliver lasting benefits and inspire similar efforts across the country.
