Open Exhibition on 5th June to mark the World Environment Day – 2019

SEN in collaboration with American Geophysical Union (AGU) – Centennial organized an “Open Exhibition” on 5th June to mark the World Environment Day – 2019 on the theme “Air Pollution” and with a slogan “Beat Air Pollution.” The exhibition was held at the heart of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City – Patan Durbar Square. Nine schools, two colleges and two organizations participated with their materials in the stalls provided by SEN. The exhibition was organized to provide a platform for the students to exhibit their talent, innovative ideas and to raise their voice against air pollution by demonstrating materials, models, paintings and posters. The Durbar Square being a tourist attraction place has an easy and attractive exposure to the people. The exhibition was an added attraction of the day and an estimated 2,000 visitors visited the exhibition.

The main objective of the exhibition was to let the students disseminate their views and ideas on air pollution and its management to the general public through their arts, sketches and models. In the exhibition, the school students through their creativity shared their understanding of air pollution and forwarded the measures to abate air pollution through exhibiting their project works. Students were found well prepared and enthusiastic to explain about their exhibited projects to the visitors.

A jury committee was formed consisting of President of SEN, Dhiraj Pradhananga and Executive Director of SEN, Er. Mahendra Bahadur Gurung who made a meticulous observation over the students’ arts and the best three ideas with utmost relevance to the theme were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. The winners for the best ideas were announced at the end of the program. Accordingly, GEMS School (First position), V.S Niketan School (Second position) and Angel Lord High School (Third position) were awarded with gifts, certificates and cash prizes by Er. Gurung and Prof. Suresh Das Shrestha, Advisor, SEN. Similarly, all the participants were acknowledged with the Certificate of Appreciation by the Organizing Committee. The Certificates of Appreciation were signed by the Deputy Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and the Executive Director of SEN.

Participating students from the exhibition received positive take away messages of using effective public transportation, prohibiting polluting vehicles based on the theme “Beat Air Pollution”. Professor Suresh Raj Chalise, Advisor to SEN, Mr. Vivek Dhar Sharma from the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Program in Nepal, UNDP, Mr. Nibhes Man Shrestha from Association of Nepalese Alumni from Australia, and Mr. Nutan Shrestha, a local resident among the special guests appreciated the initiative and encouraged the exhibitors.

Er. Gurung on his remarks praised the student’s art and creativity in explaining the mother earth, the environment, the air pollution nexus and their dream of what the environment should be like for living being. He also underlined the urgency of actions by all the stakeholders so as to beat the air pollution.

Prof. Suresh Das Shrestha on his closing remarks also underlined the need of collective and collaborative efforts from all to address the extreme air pollution, which has alarmingly increased in recent decades mainly due the anthropogenic activities.
