The Nepal National Glacier, Water and Weather Week (NNGWWW) 2025 officially began with an inaugural ceremony on 17 March 2025 at Hotel Himalaya, Kathmandu.
Every year, World Water Day (WWD) is observed globally with the theme designated by UN-Water highlighting a specific aspect of freshwater. The theme of WWD this year is “Glacier Preservation”, which emphasizes the need for action to preserve the glaciers and address freshwater challenges.
Similarly, World Meteorological Day (WMD), celebrated on 23 March every year, is the International Day to commemorate the establishment of World Meteorological Organizations within the UN on March 23, 1950. The Day is observed by carrying out various activities related to meteorology, climate and environment. The theme of WMD 2025 is “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together”.
In Nepal, these two International Days have been combined in celebrating a week-long program Nepal National Water and Weather Week (NNWWW) since 2009 under the Chairmanship of Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), the Government of Nepal. The United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) and the beginning of the Decade of Action on Cryospheric Sciences. March 21 is declared World Day of Glaciers to be celebrated annually from this year and Nepal included this in the NNWWW naming it Nepal National Glacier, Water and Weather Week (NNGWWW) from 2025. The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) is the Secretariat for coordinating this week long program since 2009 where over 45 organizations from government and nongovernmental, public and business sectors, academia, youth-led organizations working in the related sectors come together and celebrate. This has established a national network of water and climate stakeholders bringing them together on a common platform and starting a dialogue on water and weather-related issues. This serves as a forum for exchanging ideas, addressing various weather- and water-related concerns, and developing potential policy solutions.
The week features a variety of activities, including training sessions, workshops and seminars designed to build the capacity of students, researchers and early career professionals.
