The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) in collaboration with Climate Change Learning Centre (CCLC) has organized the Info-Meet program entitled “Best from Waste: Children Move For Climate Action” to mark the Global Day of Action on 3 December 2011 with the support from the British Council Nepal and Solid Waste Management and Technical Support Centre.
The Global Day of Action on climate has been occurring every year since 2005 at the time of the annual United Nations Talks on climate change (the COP or “Conference of Parties” to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or UNFCCC). The program aims to sensitize the students and public on efficient waste disposal methods, encouraging recycle and reuse of waste materials. In the exhibition the materials prepared by the students from the waste materials was demonstrated.
The program was attended by more than 75 participants from 28 schools. The representative from The British Council Nepal and Solid Waste Management and Technical Support Centre were also present in the program.
The program started with a welcome speech by Mr. Sudarshan Rajbhandari, Vice President, SEN. Ms. Sangita Maharjan, Program Officer, SEN gave the introduction of the Global Day of Action and highlighted about the program`s activities. Similarly, Ms. Nisha Amatya, Program Officer, SEN gave her presentation on Solid Waste and Climate Change. Mr. Sujan Chitrakar, Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Centre for Art and Design, School of Art, Kathmandu University started his presentation with the Documentary Show entitled “EkaDeshama”, which was about causes of Bishnumati pollution. It was followed by his presentation “Something Out of Nothing”. He highlighted how one can prepare the reusable and decorative items from the waste material. Ms. Muna Thapa, Assistant Coordinator of CCLC gave the presentation on “Best from Waste”. She encouraged school students to prepare the different items from waste materials. The students of CCLC had also presented what they are doing from the waste materials. They also demonstrated the items prepared from waste materials in the program. Similarly, Ms. Kamu Lama, Learning Center Officer, The British Council Nepal shared about what they are doing from the waste materials of the office and how they are contributing in maintaining the advocacy for green environment within the council.
