On the 3rd December 2025, The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) was honored to welcome Dr. Piet Rombouts from the Netherlands (introduced by Mr. Jan Juffermans, founding Advisor to SEN), an expert in agroforestry with a specialization in agroecological farming.
Dr Rombouts’ visit to Nepal forms part of his volunteer work in the Kavre district, where he supports plantation program involving different species of nut trees, including walnuts and macadamias etc. He aims at giving local communities practical experiences in agroforestry practices and at promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities.
SEN and Dr. Rombouts found common ground through their shared interest and commitment to improving agroforestry, an area in which SEN has actively implemented projects in the past and continues to do so at present. Building on this shared vision, we explored opportunities for collaboration. Dr. Rombouts shared his experiences concerning agroecological practices and diversified agriculture possibilities in Nepal. He also underlined important differences in topography between the Netherlands and Nepal. Further, he emphasized how geographical conditions shape agricultural approaches in both countries. Dr. Rombouts discussed several practical measures for soil fertility improvement to sustain a healthy and resilient ecological system, including the use of organic matter, mulching and farming techniques that enhance soil structure and long-term productivity. He further illustrated the concept of Land Equivalent Ratio, whereby intercropping and agroforestry can contribute to increased crop production over a given area more than under monoculture, thus yielding more efficient use of land in a sustainable way. Overall, his insights were truly helpful and inspiring.
This meeting marked an important step towards strengthening the agroforestry network in Nepal. Together, we explored opportunities for collaborations aimed at advancing sustainable farming practices, enhancing community-based agroecological initiatives, and fostering knowledge exchange. The meeting was also attended by Professor Khem Raj Dahal, advisor to SEN and Dr. Dhiraj Pradhananga, President of SEN.
