Call for application on “Introduction to groundwater modelling with MODFLOW”

The Small Earth Nepal, in collaboration with Australian Water School (AWS) and Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board (KVWSMB) is organizing the “Introduction to groundwater modelling with MODFLOW” on 20th and 21st October, 2019 at KVWSMB, Bhaisepati, Lalitpur. The course is being partially sponsored by the International Association of Hydrogeologists NSW (IAH NSW) branch. Course materials and webinars are supplied by the AWS, an initiative of International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICEWaRM) which runs webinars delivered by highly-regarded international water professionals.

MODFLOW is widely considered as an international standard in groundwater flow modelling. The course will be offered in MODFLOW-2005, which is capable of simulating steady and transient flow in an irregularly shaped system in which aquifers can be confined, unconfined and mixed. The course is intended for groundwater professionals without a prior modelling experience. The course will be a combination of webinars, lectures and hands-on-exercises.

The course will be led by Ellen Kwantes. Ellen is a senior hydrogeologist at WSP in Sydney, Australia, and an accredited Registered Professional Geoscientist in the field of hydrogeology. Ellen has 11 years’ experience in groundwater investigations, with specific expertise in groundwater modelling, environmental assessments and monitoring programs, geochemistry and groundwater-surface water interaction.

The webinars will be hosted by Dr. Konrad Miotlinski. Dr Miotlinski has 15 years research and consulting experience across Europe, Australia and South America. He has used his models to (a) plan and optimise operation of managed aquifer recharge sites and open pit mines, (b) assess water resources in regional scale aquifers, (c) evaluate impacts of mining on the environment, and (d) optimize groundwater pumping under water quality constraints.

Course fee: NPR 2,000 per participant.

We are accommodating a total of 15 participants and selection will be on first-come first-served basis. To apply, please send a letter of interest to Aashna Shakya (ashanashakya644@gmail.com) by 4th October. Selected participants will be contacted by 13th October.
