River Level Sensor, Programming, and Maintenance Training

8th September 2022

The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) organized the training program on September 6, 2022, under the project Landslide Environmental Virtual Observatories (L-EVO) to capacitate the project staff about the river level sensor installed in the project area (Karnali basin). This training was provided by Professor Buytaert Wouter (Professor, Imperial College London, UK) and was coordinated by Mr. Neeraj Sah (Doctoral student; Imperial College London, UK).

This training was mainly focused on programming and maintenance of the water level sensor (Arduino Programming), and the sensor is a developed Arduino Mini Pro chipset programmed by Future Technology Devices International (FTDI) serial module. In this instrument setup, the Arduino Mini Pro chipset uses a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor to measure water level based on the visible spectrum. The training has helped the participants to learn about receiving, processing, and transferring data from the water level sensors to the user/observer.

The water level sensors for the L-EVO project are placed in the Karnali river and currently facing technical errors. This training has enhanced knowledge about troubleshooting the damaged sensors in the field to operationalize them. The trained team will be deployed to the field for maintenance of water level sensors and hopefully will be successful in the maintenance.
