As part of the Nepal National Glacier, Water and Weather Week (NNGWWW) 2025, a two-day training on HEC-RAS was conducted on 17-18 March 2025 at Everest Engineering College, Lalitpur. The training was conducted jointly by The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Nepal, The Small Earth Nepal (SEN), Society of Hydrologists and Meteorologists-Nepal (SOHAM-Nepal), Everest Engineering College, and Universal Engineering and Science College (UESC). The training aimed to strengthen the participants skills in hydrological modeling and water resource management using HEC-RAS software.
The training was attended by 24 participants (F:10, M:14), including students from Bachelors to Phd level, early career researchers and professionals in the field of hydrology, water resource and disaster management. The facilitator of the training, Engineer Binay Shakya (Assistant Professor, Nepal Engineering College), shared his extensive expertise in the water resources sector and practical application of HEC-RAS software.
The training built a strong foundation on flood modeling and water resource analysis among the participants. The training covered both 1D and 2D flow modeling, hazard mapping, and flow analysis in the Koshi region and hypothetical scenarios. Participants gained hands-on exercises, creating their own projects to simulate river channels, flood extents, and flow variations.
